This is the Sanskrit Mahavastu: a lengthy work on Buddhist teachings and narratives belonging to the school of early Buddhism (Mahasanghika). This edition only includes those metrical verses occuring in the various stories and Jatakas, as well as the corresponding English translation by J. J. Jones.

Verse 7.13

को नु हेतुर् इह प्रत्ययो च को येन्ऽ इमा जिनसुता उपनीता ।
निर्वृतिं उपगता सहसोल्का ब्रूहि कारणम् इहार्य यथावत् ॥ १३ ॥

ko nu hetur iha pratyayo ca ko yen' imā jinasutā upanītā |
nirvṛtiṃ upagatā sahasolkā brūhi kāraṇam ihārya yathāvat || 13 ||

“What, we pray you, is the reason, what the cause, O son of the Conqueror, that these firebrands which we brought with us have been suddenly put out? Noble sir, declare the reason for this.” (13)
