Mahavastu [sanskrit verses and english]

by Émile Senart | 1882 | 56,574 words

This is the Sanskrit Mahavastu: a lengthy work on Buddhist teachings and narratives belonging to the school of early Buddhism (Mahasanghika). This edition only includes those metrical verses occuring in the various stories and Jatakas, as well as the corresponding English translation by J. J. Jones.

Verse 7.14

देवता खलु प्रसन्ना काश्यपे तस्य एष खलु ऋद्धिभावना ।
नैव ताव ज्वलनो ज्वलिष्यति याव नागतो अग्रपारगः ॥ १४ ॥

devatā khalu prasannā kāśyape tasya eṣa khalu ṛddhibhāvanā |
naiva tāva jvalano jvaliṣyati yāva nāgato agrapāragaḥ || 14 ||

[Aniruddha replied] “The devas, you must know, are gracious to Kashyapa, and it is by the force of his magic power that the flames will not burn before he who has pre-eminence comes along.” (14)
