Consisting of 18 books, the Mahabharata details the history and legends concerning ancient India (Bharata), including a major battle campaign involving the Kauravas and the Pandavas, also known as the Kurukshetra War. This portion also contains the Bhagavad-Gita. Alternative titles: Mahābhārata (महाभारत).

तन्नः कार्यं पक्षिवर प्रशाधि यत्कार्याणां मन्यसे श्रेष्ठमेकम् ।
यत्कृत्वा वै पुरुषः सर्वबन्धैर्विमुच्यते विहगेन्द्रेह शीघ्रम् ॥ ६ ॥

yatkṛtvā vai puruṣaḥ sarvabandhairvimucyate vihagendreha śīghram || 6 ||
