Consisting of 18 books, the Mahabharata details the history and legends concerning ancient India (Bharata), including a major battle campaign involving the Kauravas and the Pandavas, also known as the Kurukshetra War. This portion also contains the Bhagavad-Gita. Alternative titles: Mahābhārata (महाभारत).

अदत्तादानमेवेदं कृतं पार्थिवसत्तम ।
स्तेनं मां त्वं विदित्वा च स्वधर्ममनुपालय ।
शीघ्रं धारय चौरस्य मम दण्डं नराधिप ॥ १० ॥

adattādānamevedaṃ kṛtaṃ pārthivasattama |
stenaṃ māṃ tvaṃ viditvā ca svadharmamanupālaya |
śīghraṃ dhāraya caurasya mama daṇḍaṃ narādhipa || 10 ||
