(“Babchi”) from the Fabaceae or “legume” family of flowering plants, according to verse 4.62-65 of the 13th-century Raj Nighantu or Rājanighaṇṭu. The fourth chapter (śatāhvādi-varga) of this book enumerates eighty varieties of small plants (pṛthu-kṣupa). Together with the names Avalgujā and Vākucī, there are a total of twenty-one Sanskrit synonyms identified for this plant.

Source: Wisdom Library: Āyurveda and botany1) Avalguja (अवल्गुज) is a Sanskrit word referring to Psoralea corylifolia (“Malaysian scurfpea”). It is a type of legume (śamīdhānya), according to Caraka in his Carakasaṃhitā sūtrasthāna (chapter 27), a classical Ayurvedic work. It is also known as Avalgujaka. The plant Avalguja is part of the Śamīdhānyavarga group of medicinal plants, referring to the “group of legumes”. The plant is also part of the Śākavarga group of medicinal plants, referring to the “group of vegetables/pot-herbs”. Caraka defined such groups (vargas) based on the dietic value of the plant. Avalguja alleviate kapha and vāta.
According to the Bhāvaprakāśa it has the following synonyms: Bākucī, Somarājī, Suparṇikā, Śaśilekhā, Kṛṣṇaphalā, Somā, Pūtiphalī, Somavallī, Kālameṣī and Kuṣṭhaghnī. The Bhāvaprakāśa, which is a 16th century medicinal thesaurus authored by Bhāvamiśra.
2) Avalguja (अवल्गुज) is a Sanskrit word referring to the “ironwood plant”, a species of plant from the Asteraceae family., and is used throughout Ayurvedic literature such as the Caraka-saṃhitā. It is also known by the synonyms Āraṇyajīrakā or Bṛhatpālī in Sanskrit or Kṛmiśatṛu in Malayalam. The official botanical name of the plant is Vernonia anthelmintica or Centratherum anthelminticum. The literal translation of Avalguja is “of no good origin or extraction”.
