Mahavastu [sanskrit verses and english]

by Émile Senart | 1882 | 56,574 words

This is the Sanskrit Mahavastu: a lengthy work on Buddhist teachings and narratives belonging to the school of early Buddhism (Mahasanghika). This edition only includes those metrical verses occuring in the various stories and Jatakas, as well as the corresponding English translation by J. J. Jones.

Verse 64.127

catvāri dvīpāṃ vasi īśvaratve na ca karesi iha anuśāstiṃ |
tvaṃ ṛddhiprāpto vicaresi loke śiṣyo te bheṣyaṃ yatha ekaputro || 127 ||

“Thou shalt control under thy sovereignty the four continents. But here thou wouldst have no dominion. With the magic power at thy command thou shouldst go forth into the world. I shall be thy disciple, like an only son. (127)
