Mahavastu [sanskrit verses and english]

by Émile Senart | 1882 | 56,574 words

This is the Sanskrit Mahavastu: a lengthy work on Buddhist teachings and narratives belonging to the school of early Buddhism (Mahasanghika). This edition only includes those metrical verses occuring in the various stories and Jatakas, as well as the corresponding English translation by J. J. Jones.

Verse 30.50

एवम् इह काश्यपं महर्षि परिभाषन्ति जना परीत्तप्रज्ञाः ।
स्वाख्यातपदं अनिन्दितं पुरुषाजानियम् अनतिक्रमं ॥ ५० ॥

evam iha kāśyapaṃ maharṣi paribhāṣanti janā parīttaprajñāḥ |
svākhyātapadaṃ aninditaṃ puruṣājāniyam anatikramaṃ || 50 ||

Thus do these men of inferior understanding revile Kashyapa the seer, the eloquent preacher, the irreproachable, the sterling man who does not transgress. (50)
