Mahavastu [sanskrit verses and english]

by Émile Senart | 1882 | 56,574 words

This is the Sanskrit Mahavastu: a lengthy work on Buddhist teachings and narratives belonging to the school of early Buddhism (Mahasanghika). This edition only includes those metrical verses occuring in the various stories and Jatakas, as well as the corresponding English translation by J. J. Jones.

Verse 20.98

एवं च बहुप्रकारां कथां कथेन्ता रमन्ति देवगणा ।
रूपं वर्णं तेजं बलं च विरजस्य कथयन्ता ॥ ९८ ॥

evaṃ ca bahuprakārāṃ kathāṃ kathentā ramanti devagaṇā |
rūpaṃ varṇaṃ tejaṃ balaṃ ca virajasya kathayantā || 98 ||

And so the hosts of devas rejoice as they relate their varied themes, telling of the form, the colour, the might and the strength of him who is free from passion. (98)
