Consisting of 18 books, the Mahabharata details the history and legends concerning ancient India (Bharata), including a major battle campaign involving the Kauravas and the Pandavas, also known as the Kurukshetra War. This portion also contains the Bhagavad-Gita. Alternative titles: Mahābhārata (महाभारत).

जाया जनयते पुत्रमात्मनोऽङ्गं द्विधा कृतम् ।
तस्माद्भरस्व दुःषन्त पुत्रं शाकुन्तलं नृप ॥ ३१ ॥

jāyā janayate putramātmano'ṅgaṃ dvidhā kṛtam |
tasmādbharasva duḥṣanta putraṃ śākuntalaṃ nṛpa || 31 ||
