Consisting of 18 books, the Mahabharata details the history and legends concerning ancient India (Bharata), including a major battle campaign involving the Kauravas and the Pandavas, also known as the Kurukshetra War. This portion also contains the Bhagavad-Gita. Alternative titles: Mahābhārata (महाभारत).

स्वर्गे लोके श्ववतां नास्ति धिष्ण्यष्टापूर्तं क्रोधवशा हरन्ति ।
ततो विचार्य क्रियतां धर्मराजत्यज श्वानं नात्र नृशंसमस्ति ॥ १० ॥
