Consisting of 18 books, the Mahabharata details the history and legends concerning ancient India (Bharata), including a major battle campaign involving the Kauravas and the Pandavas, also known as the Kurukshetra War. This portion also contains the Bhagavad-Gita. Alternative titles: Mahābhārata (महाभारत).

युधिष्ठिर उवाच ।
अनार्यमार्येण सहस्रनेत्रशक्यं कर्तुं दुष्करमेतदार्य ।
मा मे श्रिया संगमनं तयास्तुयस्याः कृते भक्तजनं त्यजेयम् ॥ ९ ॥
