Consisting of 18 books, the Mahabharata details the history and legends concerning ancient India (Bharata), including a major battle campaign involving the Kauravas and the Pandavas, also known as the Kurukshetra War. This portion also contains the Bhagavad-Gita. Alternative titles: Mahābhārata (महाभारत).

वसिष्ठ उवाच ।
नैतस्येह यथास्माकमग्निहोत्रमनिर्हुतम् ।
सायं प्रातश्च होतव्यं तेन पीवाञ्शुनःसखः ॥ ४ ॥

vasiṣṭha uvāca |
naitasyeha yathāsmākamagnihotramanirhutam |
sāyaṃ prātaśca hotavyaṃ tena pīvāñśunaḥsakhaḥ || 4 ||
