Consisting of 18 books, the Mahabharata details the history and legends concerning ancient India (Bharata), including a major battle campaign involving the Kauravas and the Pandavas, also known as the Kurukshetra War. राज्यं हि सततं दुःखमाश्रमाश्च सुदुर्विदाः ।
परिवारेण वै दुःखं दुर्धरं चाकृतात्मभिः ।
भूयिष्ठं च नरेन्द्राणां विद्यते न शुभा गतिः ॥ २ ॥

rājyaṃ hi satataṃ duḥkhamāśramāśca sudurvidāḥ |
parivāreṇa vai duḥkhaṃ durdharaṃ cākṛtātmabhiḥ |
bhūyiṣṭhaṃ ca narendrāṇāṃ vidyate na śubhā gatiḥ || 2 ||
