Consisting of 18 books, the Mahabharata details the history and legends concerning ancient India (Bharata), including a major battle campaign involving the Kauravas and the Pandavas, also known as the Kurukshetra War. This portion also contains the Bhagavad-Gita. Alternative titles: Mahābhārata (महाभारत).

एता दीर्घमिवोच्छ्वस्य विक्रुश्य च विलप्य च ।
विस्पन्दमाना दुःखेन वीरा जहति जीवितम् ॥ ४७ ॥

etā dīrghamivocchvasya vikruśya ca vilapya ca |
vispandamānā duḥkhena vīrā jahati jīvitam || 47 ||
