Consisting of 18 books, the Mahabharata details the history and legends concerning ancient India (Bharata), including a major battle campaign involving the Kauravas and the Pandavas, also known as the Kurukshetra War. This portion also contains the Bhagavad-Gita. Alternative titles: Mahābhārata (महाभारत).

वासुदेव उवाच ।
अमोघः परमास्त्रस्य पातस्तस्य भविष्यति ।
स तु गर्भो मृतो जातो दीर्घमायुरवाप्स्यति ॥ ८ ॥

amoghaḥ paramāstrasya pātastasya bhaviṣyati |
sa tu garbho mṛto jāto dīrghamāyuravāpsyati || 8 ||
