Consisting of 18 books, the Mahabharata details the history and legends concerning ancient India (Bharata), including a major battle campaign involving the Kauravas and the Pandavas, also known as the Kurukshetra War. शशिप्रकाशाननमर्जुनो यदा क्षुरेण कर्णस्य शिरो न्यपातयत् ।
अथान्तरिक्षे दिवि चेह चासकृद्बभूव हाहेति जनस्य निस्वनः ॥ ५१ ॥

śaśiprakāśānanamarjuno yadā kṣureṇa karṇasya śiro nyapātayat |
athāntarikṣe divi ceha cāsakṛdbabhūva hāheti janasya nisvanaḥ || 51 ||
