Consisting of 18 books, the Mahabharata details the history and legends concerning ancient India (Bharata), including a major battle campaign involving the Kauravas and the Pandavas, also known as the Kurukshetra War. वासुदेव उवाच ।
राजा श्रान्तो जगतो विक्षतश्च कर्णेन संख्ये निशितैर्बाणसंघैः ।
तस्मात्पार्थ त्वां परुषाण्यवोचत्कर्णे द्यूतं ह्यद्य रणे निबद्धम् ॥ ६४ ॥

rājā śrānto jagato vikṣataśca karṇena saṃkhye niśitairbāṇasaṃghaiḥ |
tasmātpārtha tvāṃ paruṣāṇyavocatkarṇe dyūtaṃ hyadya raṇe nibaddham || 64 ||
