Consisting of 18 books, the Mahabharata details the history and legends concerning ancient India (Bharata), including a major battle campaign involving the Kauravas and the Pandavas, also known as the Kurukshetra War. क्षुरप्रकृत्तौ सुभृशं सतोमरौ च्युताङ्गदौ चन्दनरूषितौ भुजौ ।
गजात्पतन्तौ युगपद्विरेजतुर्यथाद्रिशृङ्गात्पतितौ महोरगौ ॥ १८ ॥
