Chapter 168 - The story of the merchant Dhanaratha

bhūtapūrvaṃ, bhikṣavo, dhanaratho nāma mahāsārthavāho babhūva; paṃcabhiḥ sārthavāhaiḥ sārdhaṃ mahāsamudraṃ saṃprasthitaḥ; te tasya sārthavāhasya anyonyakathālāpasaumukhyā anyonyakṛtapraṇayā saṃvṛttāḥ; yāvadanupūrveṇa samudratīramanuprāptaiḥ pratyekaṃ vahanāni sajjīkṛtāni; avataraṇakāle tairdhanarathaḥ sārthavāho'bhihitaḥ; sārthavāha vayaṃ tvayā vinā dhṛtiṃ na labhāmahe; sa kathayati: yadyevamihaivābhiruhataḥ vahanāni mucyantāmiti; te tatrābhirūḍhāḥ, vātaścotthitḥ; saṃtrastānāṃ dhanarathaḥ kathayati: bhavanto bibhīta; yadā vahanaṃ vināśamupaiti tadā mama kaṇṭhe lageta, ahaṃ vo uttārayiṣyāmi iti; kuśalā bhavanti (i 14) bodhisatvāsteṣu teṣu śilpasthānakarmasthāneṣu; tena mahārhāni ratnāni kakṣāyāmupanibaddhāni; yānapātraṃ vipannam; te sārthavāhasylagnāḥ; te tena śrāntakāyena īṣajjīvitāvaśeṣeṇa samudratīrasaṃprāptitāḥ; taiścāsau sthalaprāptaiḥ pratimuktaḥ; so'tyantanirutsāhaḥ kālagataḥ; tairasau jalātsthalamuttāritaḥ; yāvatpaśyanti kakṣopanibaddhāni mahārhāni ratnāni; te tānyādāya prakrāntāḥ.
kiṃ manyadhve bhikṣavaḥ? yo'sau dhanaratho nāma sārthavāha ahameva sa tena kālena tena samayena; ye te paṃcakā bhikṣavaḥ tadāpyete mayā mahāsamudrāduttārya ratnaiḥ saṃvibhaktāḥ; etarhyapymayā saṃsārakāntārāduttārya indriyabalabodhyaṅgaratnaiḥ saṃvibhaktāḥ.
yadāyuṣmānājñātakauṇḍinyo vṛddhānte niṣīdati, tadā parṣadaṃ chatrīkṛtya niṣīdati; bhikṣavaḥ saṃśayajātāḥ sarvasaṃśayacchettāraṃ buddhaṃ bhagavantaṃ papracchuḥ: kiṃ bhadanta āyuṣmatā ājñātakauṇḍinyena karma kṛtaṃ yasya karmaṇo vipākena chatrīkṛtya parṣadaṃ niṣīdati? bhagavānāha: kauṇḍinyena bhikṣavo bhikṣuṇā karmāṇi kṛtānyupacitāni labdhasaṃbhārāni pūrvavadyāvatphalanti khalu dehinām.
