Mahavastu [sanskrit verses and english]

by Émile Senart | 1882 | 56,574 words

This is the Sanskrit Mahavastu: a lengthy work on Buddhist teachings and narratives belonging to the school of early Buddhism (Mahasanghika). This edition only includes those metrical verses occuring in the various stories and Jatakas, as well as the corresponding English translation by J. J. Jones.

Verse 45.12

yaṃ codayitvā paribhāṣi devate tatrārthaṃ paśāmi te chinnasāgaraṃ |
śrotaṃ na khaneya na mūlam uddharet na tv antaraṃ yasya na pāram uttaret || 12 ||

“O deva, I know the reason why you upbraid and admonish me. If the ocean were effaced it would no longer scoop out a channel for its stream nor uproot trees. No longer would there be an obstacle against reaching the shore beyond. (12)
