by Émile Senart | 1882 | 56,574 words

This is the Sanskrit Mahavastu: a lengthy work on Buddhist teachings and narratives belonging to the school of early Buddhism (Mahasanghika). This edition only includes those metrical verses occuring in the various stories and Jatakas, as well as the corresponding English translation by J. J. Jones.

Verse 20.94

नाभरणकथा तेषां न पि वस्त्रकथा प्रवर्तति कदाचित् ।
यानोद्यानकथा या नोद्यानकथा वा मनसापि न जायते तेषां ॥ ९४ ॥

nābharaṇakathā teṣāṃ na pi vastrakathā pravartati kadācit |
yānodyānakathā yā nodyānakathā vā manasāpi na jāyate teṣāṃ || 94 ||

There is no talk of jewellery, nor of dress. No talk of driving and pleasure-gardens occurs to their minds. (94)
