Mahavastu [sanskrit verses and english]

by Émile Senart | 1882 | 56,574 words

This is the Sanskrit Mahavastu: a lengthy work on Buddhist teachings and narratives belonging to the school of early Buddhism (Mahasanghika). This edition only includes those metrical verses occuring in the various stories and Jatakas, as well as the corresponding English translation by J. J. Jones.

Verse 20.93

न च कामकथान्या वा नाप्य् अप्सरसां कथा न गीतकथा ।
न च वाद्यकथा तेषां न पि भुक्तकथा न पानकथा ॥ ९३ ॥

na ca kāmakathānyā vā nāpy apsarasāṃ kathā na gītakathā |
na ca vādyakathā teṣāṃ na pi bhuktakathā na pānakathā || 93 ||

There is no talk of sensual delight, nor of Apsarases, nor of song, nor of instrumental music, nor of eating and drinking. (93)
