by Émile Senart | 1882 | 56,574 words

This is the Sanskrit Mahavastu: a lengthy work on Buddhist teachings and narratives belonging to the school of early Buddhism (Mahasanghika). This edition only includes those metrical verses occuring in the various stories and Jatakas, as well as the corresponding English translation by J. J. Jones.

Verse 10.36

सप्तरात्रम् इति निश्चयाश् च ये ये पि ते निरयदारुणालया ।
ये च प्रेतभवनेषु प्राणिनो ते भवन्ति सुखिताश् च नाम ॥ ३६ ॥

saptarātram iti niścayāś ca ye ye pi te nirayadāruṇālayā |

Those who are under doom of death in seven nights, those who dwell in the pitiless hells, and those in the world of ghosts, all become glad and happy. (36)
