Chronologically it precedes the Ramayana.

तरत्तरङ्गो जलधिर्जलमेव यथाखिलम् ।
दृश्योच्छूनमपि ब्रह्म तथा ब्रह्मैव नेतरत् ॥ ७ ॥

tarattaraṅgo jaladhirjalameva yathākhilam |
dṛśyocchūnamapi brahma tathā brahmaiva netarat || 7 ||

As the rolling waves of the sea, are no other than its heaving water, so the visible phenomena in the world, are no other than the spirit of Brahma disporting in itself.
