The Yogavasistha is a Hindu spiritual text written by Valmiki (who also authored the Ramayana) dealing with the philosophical topics from the Advaita-vedanta school. Chronologically it precedes the Ramayana.

नानानर्थगणोपेता चेष्टापरवशाशया ।
कष्टात्कष्टमनुप्राप्ता परितापानुतापिनी ॥ ८६ ॥

nānānarthagaṇopetā ceṣṭāparavaśāśayā |
kaṣṭātkaṣṭamanuprāptā paritāpānutāpinī || 86 ||

The mind that is captivated by its desires, and led onward by its exertions, meets with one difficulty after another, and has cause to repent and grieve at every step.
