Consisting of 18 books, the Mahabharata details the history and legends concerning ancient India (Bharata), including a major battle campaign involving the Kauravas and the Pandavas, also known as the Kurukshetra War. आख्येयं तस्य यद्वृत्तं वृष्णीनां वैशसं महत् ।
स तु श्रुत्वा महातेजा यदूनामनयं प्रभो ।
आगन्ता क्षिप्रमेवेह न मेऽत्रास्ति विचारणा ॥ १४ ॥

ākhyeyaṃ tasya yadvṛttaṃ vṛṣṇīnāṃ vaiśasaṃ mahat |
sa tu śrutvā mahātejā yadūnāmanayaṃ prabho |
āgantā kṣiprameveha na me'trāsti vicāraṇā || 14 ||
