Consisting of 18 books, the Mahabharata details the history and legends concerning ancient India (Bharata), including a major battle campaign involving the Kauravas and the Pandavas, also known as the Kurukshetra War. This portion also contains the Bhagavad-Gita. Alternative titles: Mahābhārata (महाभारत).

देव्युवाच ।
एवं भविष्यत्यमरप्रभाव नाहं मृषा जातु वदे कदाचित् ।
भार्यासहस्राणि च षोडशैव तासु प्रियत्वं च तथाक्षयत्वम् ॥ ७ ॥

devyuvāca |
evaṃ bhaviṣyatyamaraprabhāva nāhaṃ mṛṣā jātu vade kadācit |
bhāryāsahasrāṇi ca ṣoḍaśaiva tāsu priyatvaṃ ca tathākṣayatvam || 7 ||
