Mahavastu [sanskrit verses and english]

by Émile Senart | 1882 | 56,574 words

This is the Sanskrit Mahavastu: a lengthy work on Buddhist teachings and narratives belonging to the school of early Buddhism (Mahasanghika). This edition only includes those metrical verses occuring in the various stories and Jatakas, as well as the corresponding English translation by J. J. Jones.

Verse 111.28

बहू सत्वा विहन्यन्ति करोन्ता विविधां तपां ।
निष्ठां अनधिगच्छन्ता अवितीर्णकथंकथा ॥ २८ ॥

bahū satvā vihanyanti karontā vividhāṃ tapāṃ |
niṣṭhāṃ anadhigacchantā avitīrṇakathaṃkathā || 28 ||

Many men are lost though they perform divers austerities. They do not reach perfection because they have not passed beyond doubt. (28)
