by Émile Senart | 1882 | 56,574 words

This is the Sanskrit Mahavastu: a lengthy work on Buddhist teachings and narratives belonging to the school of early Buddhism (Mahasanghika). This edition only includes those metrical verses occuring in the various stories and Jatakas, as well as the corresponding English translation by J. J. Jones.

Verse 89.13

परिदह्यते मे हृदयं परिपृच्छति वाचाय मधुराय सो ।
न शक्यं राहुलशिरिस्य स्वकस्य पुत्रस्य नाख्यातुं ॥ १३ ॥

paridahyate me hṛdayaṃ paripṛcchati vācāya madhurāya so |
na śakyaṃ rāhulaśirisya svakasya putrasya nākhyātuṃ || 13 ||

“My heart is aflame, for he pleads with such gentle words. I cannot but tell my own son, the noble Rahula. (13)
