Mahavastu [sanskrit verses and english]

by Émile Senart | 1882 | 56,574 words

This is the Sanskrit Mahavastu: a lengthy work on Buddhist teachings and narratives belonging to the school of early Buddhism (Mahasanghika). This edition only includes those metrical verses occuring in the various stories and Jatakas, as well as the corresponding English translation by J. J. Jones.

Verse 64.349

शीलं व पूजेतु शास्तु शासने सुप्रतिष्ठितो ।
दुःशीलो छम्भितो दूरं न सो बुद्धस्य श्रावको ॥ ३४९ ॥

śīlaṃ va pūjetu śāstu śāsane supratiṣṭhito |
duḥśīlo chambhito dūraṃ na so buddhasya śrāvako || 349 ||

Let him who stands faithfully by the Master’s teaching honour morality. The immoral man is driven far away; he is not a disciple of the Buddha. (349)
