This is the Sanskrit Mahavastu: a lengthy work on Buddhist teachings and narratives belonging to the school of early Buddhism (Mahasanghika). This edition only includes those metrical verses occuring in the various stories and Jatakas, as well as the corresponding English translation by J. J. Jones.

Verse 53.28

दन्तान नाम कारणा हनन्ति नागा मृगा च मान्सार्थं ।
चमरी च बालहेतोर् द्वीपयो चार्थाय चर्मस्य ॥ २८ ॥

dantāna nāma kāraṇā hananti nāgā mṛgā ca mānsārthaṃ |
camarī ca bālahetor dvīpayo cārthāya carmasya || 28 ||

“Elephants are slain for their tusks and deer for their flesh; yaks for their bushy tails and leopards for their skins. (28)
