Mahavastu [sanskrit verses and english]

by Émile Senart | 1882 | 56,574 words

This is the Sanskrit Mahavastu: a lengthy work on Buddhist teachings and narratives belonging to the school of early Buddhism (Mahasanghika). This edition only includes those metrical verses occuring in the various stories and Jatakas, as well as the corresponding English translation by J. J. Jones.

Verse 21.64

परिचंक्रमतां तेषां धरणिरजो क्रमवरा न संकिरति ।
न च सान पश्यामि पदं पृथिव्याम् इदं अपि आश्चर्यं ॥ ६४ ॥

paricaṃkramatāṃ teṣāṃ dharaṇirajo kramavarā na saṃkirati |
na ca sāna paśyāmi padaṃ pṛthivyām idaṃ api āścaryaṃ || 64 ||

“As they walk about the dust of the earth does not soil their noble feet. I see no footprints of theirs on the ground—this too is a marvel. (64)
