by Émile Senart | 1882 | 56,574 words

This is the Sanskrit Mahavastu: a lengthy work on Buddhist teachings and narratives belonging to the school of early Buddhism (Mahasanghika). This edition only includes those metrical verses occuring in the various stories and Jatakas, as well as the corresponding English translation by J. J. Jones.

Verse 17.76

kaṃ bodhayāmi mama ko nu bhave sahāyo kiṃ vā karomi divase api vipranaṣṭe |
hā hemakāñcananibhena kila vihīno rājā jahiṣyati sabandhujano śarīraṃ || 76 ||

“Whom shall I arouse? Who will be my ally? What can I do now that it is no longer day? Alas, the king and his folk, bereft of him whose splendour is golden, will perish.” (76)
