This is the Sanskrit Mahavastu: a lengthy work on Buddhist teachings and narratives belonging to the school of early Buddhism (Mahasanghika). This edition only includes those metrical verses occuring in the various stories and Jatakas, as well as the corresponding English translation by J. J. Jones.

Verse 17.77

तं देवसंघ अवची मधुरप्रलापी किं छन्दका लपसि किं ति विहन्यितेन ।
नैतस्य मारकपुत्राण्य् अपि उद्यतानि विघ्नं समर्थ जनयेयु कुतो पुनस् त्वं ॥ ७७ ॥

taṃ devasaṃgha avacī madhurapralāpī kiṃ chandakā lapasi kiṃ ti vihanyitena |
naitasya mārakaputrāṇy api udyatāni vighnaṃ samartha janayeyu kuto punas tvaṃ || 77 ||

A throng of devas spoke to him in sweet tones, “Why do you lament, Chandaka, why are you troubled at this? Trained warriors could not bar his going forth. How then can you? (77)
