Mahavastu [sanskrit verses and english]

by Émile Senart | 1882 | 56,574 words

This is the Sanskrit Mahavastu: a lengthy work on Buddhist teachings and narratives belonging to the school of early Buddhism (Mahasanghika). This edition only includes those metrical verses occuring in the various stories and Jatakas, as well as the corresponding English translation by J. J. Jones.

Verse 2.15

असिनो चापरा तेषां तीक्ष्णा हस्तेषु जायिथ ।
येहि च्छिन्दन्ति अन्योन्यं प्रदुष्टमनसा नराः ॥ १५ ॥

asino cāparā teṣāṃ tīkṣṇā hasteṣu jāyitha |
yehi cchindanti anyonyaṃ praduṣṭamanasā narāḥ || 15 ||

Sharp knives also grow from their hands, and with them these utterly demented beings rend one another. (15)
