Historical Elements in the Matsya Purana

This page relates ‘Dynasty of Andhra’ of the study on the historical elements of the Matsya-purana: one of the eighteen Mahapuranas which are Sanskrit texts that have preserved the cultural heritage, philosophy, religion, geography, etc of ancient India. This Matsyapurana was originally written in 20,000 verses and deals with topics such as architecture, ancient history, polity, religion and philosophy.

The Kṣatriya born in the dynasty of Kāṇvāyana and their lord, the king named Suśarma, who was the last king of the Śunga dynasty was defeated by force and their homeland king named Śiśuka got these kingdoms. That Śiśuka ruled for twenty-three years. After that his younger brother Kṛṣṇa ruled for eighteen years. His son Śrīśātakarṇi ruled for ten years. His son was the king named Pūrṇotsanga ruled for eighteen years. After him Skandhstambhi became the king and ruled for eighteen years. Then Śāntakarṇi became the king and ruled for firfty-six years. His son Lambodara ruled for eighteen years. His son Āpītaka ruled for twelve years. Then Meghasvāti ruled for eighteen years. Then there was a king named Svāti who ruled for eighteen years. Then Skandasvāti ruled for seven years. After that Mṛgendra Svātikarṇa named king ruled the earth for three years. Then Kuntal Svātikarṇa ruled for eight years. Then Svātikarṇa ruled for only one year. Then Riktavarṇa ruled for twenty-five years, Hāla ruled for five years, Mantulaka ruled for five years and then Purīndrasen became the king. Śāntikarṇa ruled for only one year. Then Ckorasvātikarṇa became the king and ruled for only six months. Then Śivasvāti ruled for twenty-eight years. Then Gautamī’s son famous Sātakarṇi became the king and ruled for twenty-one years. His son Pulomā ruled for twenty-eight years. Then Śivaśri Pulomā ruled for seven years, Śāntikarṇa’s son Śivaskandha ruled for twenty-nine years and then Śāntikarṇika ruled for twenty-nine years. His son Vijaya ruled for six years and then his son Caṇḍaśri Śāntikarṇa ruled for ten years. And last the second Pulomā became the king and rules for seven years. In this way, these twenty-nine Āndhra dynasty kings ruled on the earth for four hundred and eight years.[1]

After that the descendants of these Āndhra dynasty kings name Bhṛtyopa became the officers of the kingdoms. Among them there were seven Āndhravaṃśī , ten Ābhiravaṃśī , seven Gardabhila , eighteen Sakavaṃśī , eight Yavana , fourteen Tuṣāra , thirteen Guruṇḍa and nineteen Hūṇa Vaṃśī . Then seven Gardabhila dynasty kings consumed this earth. Eight Yavana kings ruled till the seven years. For seven thousand years this earth was under the Tuṣāradynasty . Then one hundred thirteen years, one hundred and eighteen years and four hundred and fifty years, that is seven hundred fifty-one years, thirteen Mleccha dynasty’s Gurunda kings consumed the earth with the Śudra dynasty. For three hundred and eleven years the Āndhra dynasty ruled and the kingdom of Śriparvatīya remain for fifty-two years. Similarly, ten Ābhira kings ruled for sixty-six years, when they were destroyed from time to time, there were a king named Kilakilā; who was in Yavana dynasty.[2]
