This page relates ‘Varahamihira (Ayurveda scholar)’ found in the study on diseases and remedies found in the Atharvaveda and Charaka-samhita. These texts deal with Ayurveda—the ancient Indian Science of life—which lays down the principles for keeping a sound health involving the use of herbs, roots and leaves. The Atharvaveda refers to one of the four Vedas (ancient Sanskrit texts encompassing all kinds of knowledge and science) containing many details on Ayurveda, which is here taken up for study.

Varāhamihira (Āyurveda scholar)

Varāhamihira—Although Ācārya Varāhamihira was a scholar of astrology. Yet he did a little subtle study of Āyurveda. He described all the sections of Vṛkṣāyurveda, Hastāyurveda [Hastyāyurveda], Aśvāyurveda etc., in a very meticulous study. King Vikramāditya of Varāhamihira was one of the jewels of the Navaratna Sabhā. One of his books on astrology is Vṛhatsaṃhitā. It is written in the epilogue chapter of the Bṛhat-Jātaka, the abode of Varāhamihira was Avantī and he was enlightened by Kāpithyaka with the blessings of Lord Sun. Varāhamihira gave an example of a verse from Vāgbhaṭṭa. From this, it appears that the advent of Varāhamihira is approximately the fifth century after Vāgbhaṭṭa. His expertise in the three branches of astrology is found in mathematical astrology, applied astrology and Saṃhitā[1].
