Chapter 3.9 - The story of Kesari (Monkey characters, part 3)

Brahma cursed the apsara woman named Managarva or Punjikasthala and made her a female monkey. She took the name Anjana and became the wife of Kesari, the monkey king who lived in Mahameru.

One of those days the Devas and Rishis came to Mahadeva and requested him to produce a son to help Rama at the time of killing Ravana. Shiva and Parvati, in the guise of monkeys, lived in the “Kridhavana’. Vayu, after a very long time, went there in search of Shiva and Parvati. Parvati refused to take the foetus which was in the form of a monkey to Kailasa. As per the suggestion of Vayu, Parvati handed her foetus to him. It was at this time Kesari and Anjana were praying to Vayu. So Vayu deposited the foetus in Anjana. The child born from Anajana was Hanuman. That is how Hanuman got the name Anjaneya, Vayuputra and Ksesarinandana etc.[1]
