The Sanskrit edition of the Yoga-vasistha including English translation and grammatical analysis. The Yogavasistha is a Hindu spiritual text written by Valmiki (who also authored the Ramayana) dealing with the philosophical topics from the Advaita-vedanta school. Chronologically it precedes the Ramayana.

प्रतिबन्धाभ्यनुज्ञानां कालो दातेति या श्रुतिः ।
विप्र संकल्पमात्रोऽसौ कालो ह्यात्मनि तिष्ठति ॥ १४ ॥

pratibandhābhyanujñānāṃ kālo dāteti yā śrutiḥ |
vipra saṃkalpamātro'sau kālo hyātmani tiṣṭhati || 14 ||

It is commonly said, that time is the giver (or producer) and obstructer of the objects of human pursuits as of all other events; but time is as quiescent as the supreme spirit, and it is the desire and exertion of people, that are the causes of their desired effects.
