The Yogavasistha is a Hindu spiritual text written by Valmiki (who also authored the Ramayana) dealing with the philosophical topics from the Advaita-vedanta school. Chronologically it precedes the Ramayana.

त्रयस्तस्या मतेर्देहा अधमोत्तममध्यमाः ।
तमःसत्त्वरजःसंज्ञाः कारणं जगतः स्थितेः ॥ ३३ ॥

trayastasyā materdehā adhamottamamadhyamāḥ |
tamaḥsattvarajaḥsaṃjñāḥ kāraṇaṃ jagataḥ sthiteḥ || 33 ||

The willful mind takes at its will its good, bad and moderate or sober forms; known under the names of satva, rajas and tamas.
