The Sanskrit edition of the Yoga-vasistha including English translation and grammatical analysis. The Yogavasistha is a Hindu spiritual text written by Valmiki (who also authored the Ramayana) dealing with the philosophical topics from the Advaita-vedanta school. Chronologically it precedes the Ramayana.

Verse 3.64.30

स्वकर्मभिस्ततो जन्ममृतिकारणतां गतैः ।
प्रयान्त्यूर्ध्वमधस्ताद्वा कर्म चित्स्पन्द उच्यते ॥ ३० ॥

svakarmabhistato janmamṛtikāraṇatāṃ gataiḥ |
prayāntyūrdhvamadhastādvā karma citspanda ucyate || 30 ||

So the personal acts of people are the causes of their repeated births and deaths in this or other worlds; and they ascend higher or sink lower by virtue of their good or bad deeds, which proceed from their hearts and the nature of their souls.
