Mahavastu [sanskrit verses and english]

by Émile Senart | 1882 | 56,574 words

This is the Sanskrit Mahavastu: a lengthy work on Buddhist teachings and narratives belonging to the school of early Buddhism (Mahasanghika). This edition only includes those metrical verses occuring in the various stories and Jatakas, as well as the corresponding English translation by J. J. Jones.

Verse 76.115

संप्रति शाक्याधिपती अतिमानहतो वितर्कमथितो व ।
तिष्ठति सविषण्णमती गिरितटपतितो यथ नागो ॥ ११५ ॥

saṃprati śākyādhipatī atimānahato vitarkamathito va |
tiṣṭhati saviṣaṇṇamatī giritaṭapatito yatha nāgo || 115 ||

By this time the lord of the Shakyans is sorely stricken in mind and disturbed of thought. He stands dejected like an elephant which has fallen over a mountain cliff. (115)
