Mahavastu [sanskrit verses and english]

by Émile Senart | 1882 | 56,574 words

This is the Sanskrit Mahavastu: a lengthy work on Buddhist teachings and narratives belonging to the school of early Buddhism (Mahasanghika). This edition only includes those metrical verses occuring in the various stories and Jatakas, as well as the corresponding English translation by J. J. Jones.

Verse 64.389

शीले अशवलः सदा अभूषि पुरिमभवेषु विशिष्टलक्षमाणः ।
तेन दशबलं उपेति शास्तं तस्य विरोचति काये लक्षणेहि ॥ ३८९ ॥

śīle aśavalaḥ sadā abhūṣi purimabhaveṣu viśiṣṭalakṣamāṇaḥ |
tena daśabalaṃ upeti śāstaṃ tasya virocati kāye lakṣaṇehi || 389 ||

He who has the marks of distinction was always unblemished in morality in his former lives. Thus he comes to be the Dashabala, the Master, and his body sparkles with the marks of excellence. (389)
