by Émile Senart | 1882 | 56,574 words

This is the Sanskrit Mahavastu: a lengthy work on Buddhist teachings and narratives belonging to the school of early Buddhism (Mahasanghika). This edition only includes those metrical verses occuring in the various stories and Jatakas, as well as the corresponding English translation by J. J. Jones.

Verse 64.230

एको सि भिक्षु स्थितो वृक्षमूले सेना च नास्ति तवैवरूपा ।
कस्य बलेन न सिया समर्थं तं मारसैन्यं तव रोमम् इंजितुं ॥ २३० ॥

eko si bhikṣu sthito vṛkṣamūle senā ca nāsti tavaivarūpā |
kasya balena na siyā samarthaṃ taṃ mārasainyaṃ tava romam iṃjituṃ || 230 ||

“Thou art all alone, Monk, as thou standest at the foot of the tree. Thou hast no host like this of mine. Through whose power should Mara’s army not be able to stir a hair of thine?” (230)
