by Émile Senart | 1882 | 56,574 words

This is the Sanskrit Mahavastu: a lengthy work on Buddhist teachings and narratives belonging to the school of early Buddhism (Mahasanghika). This edition only includes those metrical verses occuring in the various stories and Jatakas, as well as the corresponding English translation by J. J. Jones.

Verse 45.7

मणी मम देवते अत्र नष्टो सो हं गवेषामि महासमुद्रे ।
आपं क्षपित्वान मणिं लभेयं तस्यार्थम् उत्सिंचि महासमुद्रं ॥ ७ ॥

maṇī mama devate atra naṣṭo so haṃ gaveṣāmi mahāsamudre |
āpaṃ kṣapitvāna maṇiṃ labheyaṃ tasyārtham utsiṃci mahāsamudraṃ || 7 ||

“O deva,” said he, “I have lost my treasure here, and I am searching for it in the sea. I am trying to recover it by drawing off the water. For that purpose I would drain all the great ocean.” (7)
