This is the Sanskrit Mahavastu: a lengthy work on Buddhist teachings and narratives belonging to the school of early Buddhism (Mahasanghika). This edition only includes those metrical verses occuring in the various stories and Jatakas, as well as the corresponding English translation by J. J. Jones.

Verse 45.6

सा उत्तरित्वा पुरतो तम् अब्रवीत् किं माणव मार्गसि सागरातो ।
आख्याहि अस्माकं वयं अपि अनु- दास्याम मापद्य विहन्यमानः ॥ ६ ॥

sā uttaritvā purato tam abravīt kiṃ māṇava mārgasi sāgarāto |
ākhyāhi asmākaṃ vayaṃ api anu- dāsyāma māpadya vihanyamānaḥ || 6 ||

She came out of the water and standing before him asked, “Young man, what do you seek from the sea? Tell us, and we shall give it to you, lest we suffer misfortune and be destroyedI.” (6)
