by Émile Senart | 1882 | 56,574 words

This is the Sanskrit Mahavastu: a lengthy work on Buddhist teachings and narratives belonging to the school of early Buddhism (Mahasanghika). This edition only includes those metrical verses occuring in the various stories and Jatakas, as well as the corresponding English translation by J. J. Jones.

Verse 38.2

नरकं च पापकर्माणो कृतपुण्या च स्वर्गतिं ।
अपरे च मार्गं भावेत्वा निर्वास्यन्ति अनाश्रवाः ॥ २ ॥

narakaṃ ca pāpakarmāṇo kṛtapuṇyā ca svargatiṃ |
apare ca mārgaṃ bhāvetvā nirvāsyanti anāśravāḥ || 2 ||

The evil-doers will go to hell, the good to heaven. Others who have advanced in the Way will pass entirely away rid of the ashravas. (2)
