Mahavastu [sanskrit verses and english]

by Émile Senart | 1882 | 56,574 words

This is the Sanskrit Mahavastu: a lengthy work on Buddhist teachings and narratives belonging to the school of early Buddhism (Mahasanghika). This edition only includes those metrical verses occuring in the various stories and Jatakas, as well as the corresponding English translation by J. J. Jones.

Verse 29.3

इमस्मिं वा लोके परस्मिं वा पुनः स्वर्गेषु वा यं रतनं प्रणीतं ।
न तं समं अस्ति तथागतेन देवातिदेवेन नरोत्तमेन ॥ ३ ॥

imasmiṃ vā loke parasmiṃ vā punaḥ svargeṣu vā yaṃ ratanaṃ praṇītaṃ |
na taṃ samaṃ asti tathāgatena devātidevena narottamena || 3 ||

Whatever be the choicest gem in the world or the world beyond, or in heaven, it is not comparable to the Tathagata, the deva above all devas, the supreme of men. (3)
