Mahavastu [sanskrit verses and english]

by Émile Senart | 1882 | 56,574 words

This is the Sanskrit Mahavastu: a lengthy work on Buddhist teachings and narratives belonging to the school of early Buddhism (Mahasanghika). This edition only includes those metrical verses occuring in the various stories and Jatakas, as well as the corresponding English translation by J. J. Jones.

Verse 18.67

गन्धर्वगीतमधुरा जलधाराणां निपाततुल्यरवा ।
अविस्तरपिण्डितरवा गिरा गुणवरप्राधानानां ॥ ६७ ॥

gandharvagītamadhurā jaladhārāṇāṃ nipātatulyaravā |
avistarapiṇḍitaravā girā guṇavaraprādhānānāṃ || 67 ||

The voice of those who are pre-eminent in virtue is sweet as the song of the Gandharvas. It is like the sound of the lapping of waves, and it is not rendered confused by distance. (67)
