by Émile Senart | 1882 | 56,574 words

This is the Sanskrit Mahavastu: a lengthy work on Buddhist teachings and narratives belonging to the school of early Buddhism (Mahasanghika). This edition only includes those metrical verses occuring in the various stories and Jatakas, as well as the corresponding English translation by J. J. Jones.

Verse 17.85

मणिकुट्टिमा च वसुधा राजकुले कण्ठकस्य पादेहि ।
समनिहता रसति मधुरं निशां स्फुरति अद्भुतं शब्दं ॥ ८५ ॥

maṇikuṭṭimā ca vasudhā rājakule kaṇṭhakasya pādehi |
samanihatā rasati madhuraṃ niśāṃ sphurati adbhutaṃ śabdaṃ || 85 ||

The floor of the king’s courtyard, inlaid with precious stones, rumbled to the beat of Kanthaka’s hoofs, and the wondrous sound echoed softly through the night. (85)
